When Science gives you lemons…
Submit your failed experiments to be published! No Really!
While tripping through Vadlo.com and their great cartoons, I happened up on this representation of all the negative data that is par for the course for a scientist’s career.
I posted this to our Facebook Fan Page and learned that there ARE in fact 3 journals of Negative data…
- Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine
- Journal of Negative Results in Ecoloty and Evolutionary Biology
- Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results (Computational and Life Sciences)
To quote the JNR in BioMedicine:
Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine is ready to receive manuscripts on all aspects of unexpected, controversial, provocative and/or negative results/conclusions in the context of current tenets, providing scientists and physicians with responsible and balanced information to support informed experimental and clinical decisions.
Submit your failed experiments, your unexpected results, and strange-but-so-far-inconsequential-findings today! Who knows what future scientist may need to know what doesn’t work?

We were trying to make a prebiotic. In vitro tests showed our carbohydrates to be very promising, with plenty of selective prebiotic activity. However, animal and human feeding trials showed it to be slowly digested before it ever got to the lower intestine. We were disappointed – until our collaborator realized it was the ideal slow-release sweetener for low-glycemic foods. It’s now on the market in foods for diabetics.
